The Syros Library Branch has been operating since 2000, i.e. when the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering was established. Today it is housed on the first floor of the reconstructed building of the former Kornilaki tannery, two kilometers from the centre of Ermoupolis.
At the Branch there is a point of service for users (counter), open-access bookstacks, the reading hall offering a thirty two (32)-user seating capacity and four (4) terminals for the users to search, and also a room with audiovisual projection equipment. The reception area has a photocopier for users and storing cabinets where users can place their personal belongings on entering the branch.
The collection of the Syros Library Branch consists of 6,500 titles, 21 subscriptions to printed journals (four of which are not found in any other Greek academic libraries: Design Journal, Journal of Convex Analysis, Information Design Journal, International Journal of Shape Modeling) and 1,700 items of audiovisual material. The collection includes material mostly on design topics, computers, art, mathematics and engineering.
There is also a collection of Gray literature completed at and submitted by the University Department located on Syros, the collection of textbooks distributed to students of the Syros Department through the EUDOXUS programme, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, and other special collections, such as reference material (encyclopaedias, dictionaries, guides), faculty course notes, etc.
The Library is organized according to the international classification and cataloguing standards. In particular, the Library materials are organized using the Dewey Decimal Classification System, the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2 (AACR2) and the Library of Congress Subject Headings. The authority control is based on the Library of Congress Name Authorities and the Catalogue of Name Authorities of the National Library of Greece. Searching can be conducted in both the local collection and the union catalogue of the six (6) regional Library branches of University of the Aegean. The branch also provides access to a large number of databases and journals.
